New Perspectives on self Differentiation and Percept Language
August 2-8,2008

For our new Percept and Self Differentiation Programs,
A separate MerrillWeir site is in the works and will be active quite soon.

Background:
John, Joyce, Michael Merrill and Alexandra Merrill taught the Self-Differentiation lab that John and Joyce had created together. Over the years significant changes evolved both in the model and the theory holding it, as well as a reworking of the implications of the Percept Language in our multi-lingual world. It was a great run, learning and teaching as a team in many different venues. It was groundbreaking work; and that work had to change. Shortly before it was time for John and Joyce to retire and after Michael was gone, Weir/Merill Associates decided to offer a formal Three Year training for practioners who were interested in making a deeper commitment to John and Joyce’s theory. Wendy Weir joined the staff for that learning community as Wendy had been teaching with her parents previously for many years. Wendy and Alexandra continue the work as business partners now, adding staff when we have programs.

Our training community:
The community of 34 practitioners came together from the fields of individual development, human resources, psychology and counseling and organizational development. We met twice a year for three years, offering 6 five-day modules of training. Those who had attended all sessions received certificates recognizing completion of the program.

As far as John and Joyce were concerned, these practitioners would carry their work forward, as they had committed to the formal study of their model from the inside.. Of course, John always said that there would be no such thing as a WEIRLAB after he was gone. Joyce agreed with him. We would not presume to copy their work although we do recognize that all learning derives from and stands on the shoulders of the ideas, philosophies and teachers who come before. We do not propose to offer an exact replica of a Weirlab.

The New Chapter:
We four ,Alexandra Merrill,Wendy Weir, Rita Andrews and Peter Norlin are all from that Three Year learning community. Each of us brings a complex experience in the field of individual development. As a team we are an intense worldly mix of visible and invisible differences, expertise and political positions. We bring a contemporary perspective to the original theory that John and Joyce articulated, overlaying our own shared philosophical perspective. We know that this next chapter of Self Differentiation work will be an exciting challenge. We will be building on John and Joyce’s work and not at all cloning it. No one will replace them. No one is the next John and Joyce. They remain unique, original and exactly who they are.

This new team will be presenting an updated perspective on the SelfDifferentiation work and the Percept Theory, viewpoint and language. The world we all live in now has to be less self-referential, more relational and more fully embodying the diversities and intersections between race, class, gender, caste, nationality and politics of our current world. We bring this position to the learning event.

The first revisioned Self-Differentiation Lab at Hope Springs Institute will be a great experience for new and old students of this form. Hope Springs has the flavor of Old Bethel and the advantage of being near the Cincinnati hub airport. It has a 5-star organic food chef and staff, beautiful facilities for doing this kind of work and land which holds and contains the intense history of Appalachia.

• New WomensWay Program in MAINE

Embodying Female Authority
A Theory and Practice Seminar
Two Residential Weekends
October 19-21,2007, May 2-4,2008
NEBO LODGE
North Haven Island, Maine

This training seminar is for women with some experience of working in leadership positions with women’s groups AND for women whose interest in this idea is growing. It is an opportunity to take a critical look at the field of woman-identified group dynamics theory, to look at new thinking and to explore the deeper diversities in a residential learning community of women. This is an occasion to strengthen your sense of agency and political activism as a woman who works on behalf of social justice in Maine. We will follow a dynamic relational process theory through a full cycle in order to have a deeper understanding of how we can all live in accordance with laws of nature, the moon, the tides and the life of the dreams. We will be about sustainability, class and money consciousness, peace-making and transparency of power dynamics.

By creating a temporary residential community, it’s possible to turn up the heat underneath our practice. By leaving the ordinary structure, we create a threshold into the less ordinary, non-dominant states of awareness and understanding. By contracting to work over a 3 phase cycle, we can watch our development through a particular lens. By opening up the money issues among and between us, we create a real-time context for exploring our economic diversity and related class issues.

Each weekend has 3 interwoven themes:
Midwiving the Process, Scapegoats and Betrayal, Competence and Competition
As we attend to these themes, we will also
       • study the evolution of a woman-identified group dynamics theory and cosmology
       • gain skills to address patterns of critical incidents in women’s group life
       • explore the nature of perception and the prejudicial mind in an all female system
       • study patterns of use and abuse of power between women in leadership
       • develop healing intervention strategies

The 6-day 2 phase program structure will include: small group time, theory presentation and discussion, intervention discussion, peer support and self-assessment of skills. There will be pre-program work and 3 half day in-between-sessions at Alexandra’s home in St George. This added work will deepen and strengthen your understanding of your skill and practice levels. Readings, journal work and writing will be part of the curriculum.

Come look at the state of your practice, review your competencies and identify areas where you need to strengthen your skills. Come and be in a peer community of women who are devoted to supporting women in Maine emerge in leadership positions wherever they emerge. Have time to deepen your relationship to the female archetypes, dreams and images. Learn more about working with the intersections of levels in women’s group life.
